Ways to Keep Your Skin Hydrated This Summer

Ways to Keep Your Skin Hydrated This Summer

  1. Skip the long, steamy showers and opt for shorter, cooler sprays. Long, hot showers strip skin of its moisture and wash away protective oils. So limit showers to 10 minutes and keep the water cool.
  2. Check the dryness of your skin by scratching a small area on your arm or leg with your fingernail. If it leaves a white mark, your skin is indeed dry and needs both moisture and exfoliation (i.e., removal of the outermost layer of dead skin cells).
  3. Treat your neck and chest like an extension of your face. Your neck and upper chest area is covered by very sensitive skin, making it a prime spot for telltale signs of ageing such as dryness, sun spots and wrinkles. To keep this area youthful, use facial cleansing creams that hydrate and cleanse gently rather than deodorant soaps, which can be drying. Top it all off with a good facial moisturising cream.
  4. Run a humidifier every night to moisturise the air in your bedroom. Not only will it ease itchy, dry skin, you’ll be able to breathe the moist air more easily.
  5. Keep your beauty products clean and simple, particularly if you have sensitive skin. Stay away from products with colour, fragrance, or those that produce bubbles or have “antibacterial” on the label. These can all irritate skin.
  6. For soft, young-looking hands and feet, slather on moisturising cream and then slip on thin fabric socks and gloves while you sleep.
  7. Tone your skin with a sage, peppermint and witch hazel combination. Sage helps to control oil, peppermint creates a cool tingle and witch hazel helps restore the skin’s protective layer. Combine 4 ounces of witch hazel with 1 teaspoon each of sage and peppermint leaves and steep for one to three days before applying to your skin.
  8. Use a loofah daily to keep ingrown hairs and scaly skin under control. While in the shower, gently scrub bumpy or scaly skin with a circular motion to remove dead cells. For extra-smooth skin, sprinkle a few drops of an alpha-hydroxy product on the loofah before scrubbing.
  9. Use unscented baby powder to keep areas where skin meets skin—like the inner thighs, underarms, beneath large breasts—clean and dry. This is important to prevent a common skin condition called intertrigo, which occurs when such areas remain moist, fostering the growth of bacteria or fungi.
  10. If you’re gearing up for a day in the sun, steer clear of scented lotions and perfumes. Scented products can lead to blotchy skin when exposed to the sun.
  11. Smooth aloe vera gel over extra-dry skin. The acids in aloe eat away dead skin cells and speed up the healing process. Cut off an end of an aloe leaf, split open, and spread the gel on the dry area.
  12. Plunk your rough, dry elbows into grapefruit halves. First exfoliate your elbows in your bath or shower, then cut a grapefruit in half and rest one elbow on each half, letting them soak for 15 minutes. The acid in the grapefruit provides extra smoothing power.
  13. Go for a run, ride your bike, work out in the garden on a hot day—anything that gets you sweating. Sweating is nature’s way of eliminating toxic chemicals that can build up under skin. Plus, regular exercise maintains healthy circulation and blood flow throughout your body, including your skin. If you’re exercising outdoors, though, remember to wear a sunscreen on your face that protects against UVA and UVB rays, or a moisturiser with sunscreen protection.
  14. Switch moisturisers every time the seasons change. Your skin needs more moisture in the winter than in the summer. So the same day you bring those sweaters down from the attic for the winter, buy a heavier moisturiser. When you trade in the sweaters for shorts, switch to a lighter one.
  15. Avoid these three skin destroyers: Smoking, tanning salons and sunbathing. All three will age your skin prematurely.
  16. For double skin protection, apply a cream containing vitamin C to your face over your sunblock. The cream helps prevent facial skin damage, dehydration and wrinkles. Also try skin creams containing vitamin E or beta-carotene.
  17. Use a spritzer with rose, sandalwood or bergamot essential oils mixed with water. These oils are great for hydrating the skin. To create a herbal spritzer, mix a few drops of essential oil with water in a small spray bottle and spritz on your face whenever your skin needs a little boost. Your skin is more pliable when it’s hydrated, so a spray helps stave off frown lines and general movement wrinkles. The hydrator also keeps pollutants out and keeps your skin’s natural lubricants in. An added bonus: Your makeup will stay on longer and look more natural.
  18. Clean your face and neck with a natural cold cream and follow with a rosewater and glycerin rinse twice a day to remove skin-damaging pollutants.
  19. Keep your hands off your face! Because your hands touch so many surfaces, they are a magnet for dirt and germs. Rub your eyes, stroke your chin, cup your cheek and you’ve transferred everything on your hands to your face.
  20. Stop with one glass of wine or one alcoholic drink. Overdoing it enlarges the blood vessels near the surface of your facial skin.
  21. Never rub your eyes—apply compresses instead. The skin on your face is extremely delicate, especially under your eyes. So use a very light touch on your face at all times. If your eyes itch, apply a cold compress or washcloth to the area, or try a cotton pad moistened with toner or witch hazel.

How To Prepare For Your Spray Tan

Having a spray tan is the best way to get a natural, healthy glow, without having to expose your skin to any harmful UV rays. At Be Waxed And Tanned we take care of everything when it comes to having a spray tan, but there are some things you can do at home to prepare yourself and your skin.

EXFOLIATE

sugar.jpg

It’s important to remove any dry or dead skin. There are a number of exfoliating products available to buy but we recommend using sugar and water to gently scrub your skin before your spray tan. Avoid using any oil based products as they will leave a residue on your skin that could prevent your spray tan from working.

CLEAN YOUR SKIN

Before your spray tan, make sure you have a shower and remove any rescue build up. After your shower, don’t apply any moisturising products, deodorant, perfume or makeup.

PROTECT YOUR NAILS

Dollarphotoclub_66972985.jpg

Protect your finger and toe nails from discolouration by applying a clear nail varnish. If you are a tanning regular, protect your nails to avoid any colour build up over time.

WHAT TO WEAR

Wear dark, lose clothing with sandals or thongs. Avoid wearing anything tight or any shoes or socks as this may rub the tan away before it’s had time to develop. You may even like to wear no underwear so that you get a nice all over tan without any marks.

DURING YOUR SPRAY TAN

We recommend going completely nude in order to get a nice all over tan. But of course if you are not comfortable then wear dark underwear or ask us for some paper knickers.

Leave the rest to us!

We will make sure that you feel completely relaxed and comfortable throughout the whole process and end up with a gorgeous all over tan.

After your spray tan we will give you advice on how to get the best results from your tan, including when to wash it off and a run down of the things that may ruin your tan.

If you have any questions about spray tanning or you want to book an appointment, call or text our salons and we will be more than happy to help:

Skin Types and Spray Tans

Here at Be Waxed And Tanned, we are experts at all things to do with tanning. Here is a breakdown of the common skin types we come across and our recommendations for your spray tan.

Rose Leslie from Game of Thrones

Rose Leslie from Game of Thrones

Skin Type: White

The beauties with this type of skin usually have freckles and very light or red hair. This skin is very prone to burning when exposed to the sun.

Tanning Recommendation: Always use the lightest available spray tan. If you try and apply a darker colour you may go orange.

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried

Skin Type:  Light Skin

People with this lovely skin type are also prone to getting sunburnt but they will tan eventually in the sun, more so than the transparent white skin beauties. The natural hair colour for these light skinned lovelies can range from light brown to blonde and red.

Tanning Recommendation: Stick with a light or light medium colour. If you tend to have a slightly darker natural tan, then you may try a medium spray tan.

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale

Skin Type: Medium Light or Dark-Skinned European

This skin type will tan easily when exposed to sunlight and appears to not burn as readily as our first two skin types. People with this type of skin mostly (but not always) have dark hair and brown eyes.

Tanning Recommendation: Depending on how dark the person wants to look, most shades of spray tan will look great on these lucky people.

Eva Mendes

Eva Mendes

Skin Type: Medium Dark

This skin type will respond to large amounts of sunlight by producing quite a dark tan.

Tanning Recommendation: Depending on how dark the person wants to look, most shades of spray tan will work.

Jada Pinkett Smith

Jada Pinkett Smith

Skin Type:  Dark or Brown Skin

Even though it is already a dark shade, this type of skin can darken even further when exposed to prolonged periods of sunlight.

Tanning Recommendation: Any colour will work fine and we would recommend a shade to give this gorgeous skin a lovely glow or even out tone.

Lupita Nyong'o

Lupita Nyong'o

Skin Type: Very Dark or Black Skin

This spectacular skin is least likely to burn in moderate sun exposure.

Tanning Recommendation: We would recommend using the darkest spray tan colour to even out skin tone and give a natural glow.

Donating to She Rescue

3568117.jpg

Late last month I was at a function with my sister where a lady from She Rescue spoke to us about the work they do in Cambodia. I had never heard of them before, but some of the things she told us were shocking.

She Rescue is helping to combat child trafficking in Cambodia. The She Rescue home in Cambodia is a safe-haven for girls aged 5 to 16 who have been trafficked, raped, prostituted or are at risk of any of these things.

During July we are donating $1 from every treatment at Be Waxed and Tanned to this amazing charity. We also have a collection tin in our reception area and already the donations we have received from our lovely clients has been heartwarming.

We will keep you posted on how much we are raising, but we just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you - for your business, and for your generosity.
